This includes:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating online profiles<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posting comments or chatting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uploading photos and videos<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reacting to or \u2018liking\u2019 other people\u2019s posts<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharing links<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tagging photos and content<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating and sharing game modifications<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remixing or changing existing content and sharing it.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Many social media platforms have age restrictions. For example, to have a Facebook or Instagram account you need to be 13 years old.<\/strong><\/p><h4><b>Social media: benefits<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media is a big part of many young people\u2019s social and creative lives.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children and teenagers use social media to have fun, make and maintain friendships, share interests, explore identities and develop relationships . For older teenagers especially, it\u2019s often a key part of how they connect with friends.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media can connect children and teenagers to online global communities based on shared interests. These might be support networks \u2013 for example, for young people with disability or medical conditions, LGBTQI teenagers, or children from particular cultural backgrounds. Or they might be sites for commenting on and sharing content about particular interests like games, TV series, music or hobbies.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young people can get many other benefits from using social media:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital media literacy: exploring and experimenting on social media can help\u00a0 children build knowledge and skills to enjoy online activities and avoid online risks.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborative learning: adolescents can use social media to share educational content, either informally or in formal school settings.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity: young people can be creative with profile pages, photos and video, and modifications for games.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health and wellbeing: connecting with extended family and friends and taking part in local and global online communities can give a sense of connection and belonging.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h4><b>Social media: risks<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media can also pose risks. This kind of bullying can be especially hard to deal with, since it can be difficult to control and visible to a large number of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h4><a href=\"http:\/\/emindit.com\/index.php\/bullying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>What is cyberbullying?\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberbullying is the deliberate, persistent and malicious use of words or pictures in an online environment intended to cause harm to someone\u2019s wellbeing. Most common age for cyberbullying is the transition period between primary and high school when young people are around 11 or 12, but it happens throughout the teenage years so it\u2019s important to be aware.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>What does cyberbullying look like?<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberbullying comes in many forms but the most common are:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receiving intentionally hurtful text messages, emails or direct messages on social media sites<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people spreading rumours or lies about someone online<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people sending images or videos intended to humiliate or embarrass someone<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people sending threats to someone<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people setting up and using fake online profiles to embarrass or intimidate someone.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><h4><b>How is it different to other forms of bullying?<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bullying is a kind of behaviour that is designed to cause intentional harm. Cyberbullying can be even more distressing because of its very public and uncontrollable nature. For example:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s no limit to who can view or take part in cyberbullying<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it can be very difficult to remove content shared online<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bullies can be anonymous<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">content can be accessed through search engines<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard for people to escape the bullying, especially if they use technology in their everyday lives. It\u2019s suggested that young people can be more likely to bully someone online than they would in real-life, as they feel less accountable for their actions due to the nature of the online world.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>What are the effects of cyberbullying?<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effects of cyberbullying on teenagers can range from:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower school attendance and performance<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased stress and anxiety<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feelings of isolation and fear<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor concentration<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decreased self-esteem and confidence<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in extreme cases the cyberbullying can lead to suicide.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>",
